Cc Spokane Sweeps Blue Mountain, Clinches Naacc Playoff Berth

Shane Rice and Brock Barnhart both went the distance Saturday in pitching Community Colleges of Spokane to a 5-2, 6-0 doubleheader sweep of Blue Mountain CC in Pendleton, Ore.

The Sasquatch (22-11 overall) improved their Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges record to 20-7, tying them for first place with Walla Walla CC. Spokane clinched an NWAACC playoff spot.

Rice (2-0) escaped two basesloaded, no-out jams in the first game. He struck out five and walked two. Pat Fischer of CCS hit his third homer, a solo shot, in the seventh.

Jason Mathews had three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the ninth, to support Barnhart (3-3) in the second game. Barnhart struck out six. Fischer, Tyson Best and Jason Uberuaga had three hits apiece for the winners.

Whitworth 9, Pacific Lutheran 3

Brandon Allard doubled twice to support the pitching of sophomore Jason McDougal (3-1) as Whitworth defeated Pacific Lutheran 9-3 at Tacoma.

The Pirates are 10-7 in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges and 19-16-1 overall.

Whitworth, in the running for an NCIC playoff berth, may have to make up a rainout with Lewis & Clark.

Billy Wark, one of two relievers in the eighth, got his second save.

Chris Fukai and Sean Peterson doubled for Whitworth, which put away the game with a four-run ninth.Allard finished with three hits. Peterson, Fukai and Larry Turner had two apiece.

Women’s golf

Sophomore Emily Martin, a Gonzaga Prep graduate, helped Washington qualify for its first NCAA championships.

Martin shot a 2-over-par 74 for a threeday total of 13-over 229 at the West regional in Tucson, Ariz.

Martin tied for 42nd place. Huskies Dodie Mazzuca (222), who finished tied for 12th, and Caroline Spiegelberg (228), tied for 37th, placed ahead of Martin.

UW finished sixth. San Jose State and Arizona State were co-champions.
