Medical Lake Man Jailed After Wreck

Vehicular assault charges are pending against a Medical Lake man after a 10-year-old girl was injured in a car crash Saturday morning.

Samuel C. Hughes, 18, was booked into Spokane County Jail on Saturday night after being treated for facial cuts at Deaconess Medical Center.

Hughes was headed south on Craig Road near Medical Lake just before noon.

He crossed into the northbound lane and hit a car driven by Kathleen Gardipe, 37, of Edwall, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Gardipe’s daughter, Mandy, 10, a passenger in the car, suffered a deep gash in her forehead, said Sgt. Jeff Sale of the WSP. Mandy Gardipe was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Hughes had been drinking, Sale said.

“There was a strong odor of intoxicants,” he said. “(Hughes) was relatively belligerent.”

Kathleen Gardipe and her 6-year-old daughter Jamie, were not injured. All three Gardipes wore seat belts. xxxx
