No. 2 Sampras Upset

Pete Sampras was upset by defending champion Andrei Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the semifinals of the German Open in Hamburg. In the other semi, Goran Ivanisevic beat two-time defending French Open champion Sergi Bruguera 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and two-time defending champion Conchita Martinez - Nos. 2 and 4 in the world - won semifinal matches to set up an all-Spanish final for today’s Italian Open in Rome.

Sanchez Vicario beat Czech star Helena Sukova 6-3, 6-0 in just more than an hour.

Martinez advanced by beating a weary Mary Pierce, the No. 2 seed, 6-3, 6-3.
