Sooy Hurls One-Hitter As Cheney Sweeps Clarkston To Close Fl Year

Junior Cecelia Sooy pitched a onehitter in the opener Saturday as visiting Cheney swept Clarkston 12-0, 12-4 in a Frontier League doubleheader.

Cheney (10-5) completed league play and advanced to the District 7-AA/A fastpitch tournament with league rivals West Valley and East Valley. The Bantams finished 3-12.

Sooy struck out three and walked two as the Blackhawks supported her with a 15-hit attack.

For the day, Cheney’s Jenna Heffernan was 4 of 7 while Marla Powers went 4 of 8.

If Cheney finishes in third place in the league, it will open district play at 10 a.m. Friday at Franklin Park against Northeast A No. 1 seed Riverside.

The Frontier champion opens against Lakeside. Frontier No. 2 draws Newport in its opener. The other opener is Hanford, the lone Mid-Valley representative, against Kettle Falls. Three teams advance to state.

Northeast A tournament

Janessa Karstens pitched her second no-hitter of the year and struck out 11 as Riverside defeated Newport 4-0 at Franklin Park to earn the top seed to district.

Karstens had three hits, one RBI and scored a run.

Kendra Eneroth struck out seven for Newport, which advances as the No. 2 seed.

Newport advanced to the final by slapping Kettle Falls 12-1. Riverside was likewise handling Lakeside in the semifinals, 15-0.

Kettle Falls qualified No. 3 to district by defeating Lakeside 8-2. The Eagles move on as the No. 4 seed.

To move on to the semis, Kettle Falls eliminated Medical Lake 11-8 while Lakeside ousted Colfax 25-9.

Panorama League tournament

After finishing in fifth place during the regular season, Republic came through at the right time.

The Tigers defeated Northwest Christian 10-6 to earn the top seed to the District 7-B tournament. NWC moves on as No. 2.

The breaks all went the way of Republic, which earlier in the day edged Springdale 7-6 and Inchelium 12-10.

In the game for third and fourth seeds, Springdale scored five runs in the seventh to defeat league champion Inchelium 12-9.
