Devils Close Doors On Boston Garden With Win

Associated Press

Martin Brodeur stopped 28 shots to beat Boston 3-2 on Sunday, putting the visiting New Jersey Devils into the second round of the playoffs while condemning the Bruins and their building to an early elimination.

Brodeur gave up an average of just a goal a game as the Devils won the best-of-seven series 4-1, going 3-0 at the soon-to-be-shuttered Boston Garden. The Bruins scored just twice in their last three games at the building that has been their home since 1928.

Bill Guerin had a goal and an assist, and Shawn Chambers and Valeri Zelepukin also scored to support another stellar effort by Brodeur. But his bid for a record fourth shutout in the series was spoiled by Cam Neely’s unassisted second-period goal.

Andy Moog stopped 34 shots and the Dallas penalty killers blanked one of the NHL’s best power-play teams as the Stars remained alive in their first-round playoff series with a win over Detroit.

The Red Wings had beaten the Stars in all five regular-season meetings and the first three playoff games before Dallas came alive on Sunday. The Red Wings can wrap up the Western Conference quarterfinal series tonight in Detroit.

Just as they did in Game 2, the Penguins rallied from a two-goal deficit - this time with NHL scoring leader Jaromir Jagr finally breaking out with two goals - to cut Washington’s lead in the Eastern Conference series to 3-2. Game 6 will be Tuesday in Landover, Md.

Mike Ricci, Wendel Clark and Chris Simon each scored his first goal of this year’s playoffs as Quebec stayed alive with a win against New York.

The Stanley Cup champion Rangers wasted a chance to finish off the Nordiques, but will take a 3-2 lead back to New York for Game 6 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series on Tuesday.

Ricci, Clark and Simon, shut out thus far in the series, scored in the first period as the Nordiques came out strong and then held off the explosive Rangers.

The Sabres came back to make it 5-3 with 7 minutes to play, but Kevin Dineen’s goal at 15:30 ended the Buffalo challenge.
