After Bitter Court Loss, Dad Kills Boy, Himself

Just days after losing a bitter and precedent-setting battle in the New Jersey Supreme Court to bestow his last name on his out-of-wedlock son, Alan Gubernat shot the 3-year-old in the head with a .357 Magnum and then turned the gun on himself.

Both were found dead on Sunday, Mother’s Day, by Gubernat’s father, Alfred, in his son’s farmhouse in the tiny Northampton County hamlet of Coffeetown near the Bucks County border. The little boy, named Scott, was visiting his father as part of a custody arrangement with the mother, Karen Deremer of Warren County, N.J.

Last Thursday, the New Jersey Supreme Court reversed two lower court rulings and bestowed Scott with his mother’s last name - Deremer.
