M’S Acquire Belcher, Send Him To Tacoma

Associated Press

The Cincinnati Reds acquired right-handed pitcher Roger Salkeld from the Seattle Mariners on Monday in a trade for right-hander Tim Belcher.

Salkeld, 24, was the third player selected in the June 1989 draft. He broke into the majors in 1993 with Seattle and spent parts of the past two seasons with the Mariners. He had a combined 2-5 record with a 6.26 earned run average.

This year, he was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and a save in four games with Seattle’s Class AAA Tacoma affiliate. He allowed eight hits and seven walks while striking out 11 in 15 innings with Tacoma.

Belcher, 33, has spent eight years in the majors, including two with Cincinnati in 1992 and 1993. The Reds signed him to a AAA contract May 3 and he was 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts at Indianapolis.

Salkeld will be assigned to Indianapolis. Belcher goes to Tacoma.
