Bonners Ferry Advances

Idaho preps

A four-run fourth inning by the Bonners Ferry High baseball team helped the Badgers upset host St. Maries, 5-2, in an A-2 District I-II loser-out playoff game Tuesday.

With the win, Bonners Ferry (8-12 overall) will meet No. 1 seed Lakeland (17-3) in the opener of the District I-II Tournament on Thursday at Moscow. Game time is 4 p.m.

That game will be followed by Orofino meeting No. 2 Moscow at 6:30. Orofino advanced Tuesday with a 17-6 win over Priest River at Moscow.

At St. Maries, the Badgers got things rolling in the fourth inning when Duane Pennock led off with a double. He scored moments later on a Joe Robins single.

Robins scored on a double by Jesse Ross. One batter later Ross scored on Jacob Johnson’s single.

Lewiston fashioned another comeback Tuesday, rallying from a six-run deficit to down visiting Sandpoint 12-7 in an A-1 Region I loser-out playoff game Tuesday.

The victory earns Lewiston, 9-15 overall, a date Thursday at topseeded Lake City (21-3) at 4 p.m. in the first round of the regional tournament.

In the other opener Thursday, No. 3 Post Falls (7-16) travels to No. 2 Coeur d’Alene (12-12) at 4.

The Bengals, who began a lateseason rally last week, won for a fifth straight game in beating Sandpoint.

But they earned it the hard way. Lewiston starting pitcher Cindy Wendt struggled early, walking in Sandpoint’s five runs in the second inning. The Bengals, trailing early,

6-0, began to rally in the third, taking advantage of some wild pitching by Sandpoint. Lewiston’s Jamie Ebert’s two-out, two-run double in the fourth put the Bengals ahead for good.

In an A-2 District I-II loser-out playoff at Bonners Ferry, the host Badgers used the no-hit pitching of Tara Van Gundy to pummel Priest River 16-0.

Bonners (6-10) moves on to the double-elimination district tourney Saturday at St. Maries. The Badgers will meet No. 1 seed Lakeland (18-5) in a tourney opener at 9 a.m.
