Two Democratic lawmakers and several abortion rights groups called Tuesday for congressional hearings into links between radical anti-abortion groups and militias that may threaten violence against abortion clinics.
Rep. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., emphasized he was not suggesting that most anti-abortion groups or militias were violent, but he told a news conference that there is evidence of links between some “rightwing paramilitary militias and radical, anti-abortion forces.”
Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., added that Congress has for too long ignored the individuals, the groups and the funding behind the growing violence against abortion facilities.
Schumer suggested hearings on “militia groups and their connections with ideological violence.”
