Piston, Fong Take District Titles
Prep tennis
High school tennis is a sport in which one can beat his opponent one day, and face him in a school hallway the next.
But the chances of Lewis and Clark’s Spencer Piston and Dave Farley having a few choice words for each other today are slim. And the same holds true for Mead’s John Wrigley and Eric Donovan. They won’t give Mike Foiles and Brett Kaiser a hard time. They had all qualified for the regionals before Tuesday’s GSL districts.
In the boys singles championships, Piston beat Farley, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) while the doubles tandem of Wrigley and Donovan beat Foiles and Kaiser 7-5, 6-3.
In the girls singles finals, Mead’s Amy Fong beat University’s Leslie Whitten for the second time this year, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
In the girls doubles championship match, Ferris Saxons Darcy Ruemping and K.C. Richards defeated University Titans Christy Kimbrough and Emily Stuenkel 6-1, 7-6, taking the tiebreaker 7-5.
