Spokane County Settles Landfill Case

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane County commissioners Tuesday approved a $3 million settlement with an insurance company over the county’s polluted landfills.

The settlement with Twin City Fire Insurance Co. ends litigation over insurance policies for the Colbert, Greenacres and Mica landfills.

“It’s in your best interests to accept the settlement,” Jim Emacio, Spokane County’s chief civil deputy, told the commissioners.

Commissioner Steve Hasson asked why the county couldn’t have gotten more out of the $25 million general liability policy the county bought from Twin City in 1982.

Emacio said jurors likely would have found Twin City liable for only a fraction of the damage from ground water pollution.

The three landfills are all Superfund sites. The settlement covers only a small part of the remaining $38 million cleanup tab - leaving millions more to be raised through garbage rate hikes or taxes.
