Adrienne Wilson: University Year: Junior Sport: Track Event: Jumps/ Sprints

One of Steve Llewellyn’s greatest fears entering a track meet isn’t how well Adrienne Wilson will do, but whether he has his standout junior in the right event.

On the surface, that looks easy. Put her in the sprints and she’s hot on the heels of University teammate Katherine Hough. Then throw her into the relays, and the Titans win.

However, Wilson is the Greater Spokane League’s best long jumper, which knocks her out of one sprint. Recently she added the triple jump, which knocked her out of the other sprint. But no matter how good a high jumper, hurdler or even discus thrower Wilson could be, Llewellyn isn’t messing with those relays.

“It’s very difficult,” Llewellyn said. “The truth of the matter is, Adrienne is a lot like Autumn Wood (a junior star at Mead). Autumn Wood could do several different events. I would say every team has athletes like that; you’re never really sure they’re in the right events.”

Especially since they can only compete in four in high school.

“I’d say she’s scratching the surface of what her potential is,” Llewellyn said. “In the triple jump (despite setting a District 8 record of 36 feet, 6 inches last week), she’s barely scratching the surface. In the long jump she’s getting closer. Of course, she has long jumped a couple of years and triple jumped for five meets.”
