Cv, U-Hi Stack The Odds With Large Contingent At Track Regional

Two Valley schools will be busy during this weekend’s regional track meet at Spokane Falls Community College.

The meet, which qualifies individuals to the State Star Track event in Tacoma, will feature a combined 53 entries from University and Central Valley’s boys and girls teams.

University girls claimed 21 spots with Adrienne Wilson winning both the long and triple jumps during last week’s district meet. She continued her amazing consistency over 18-feet in the former and reached a record 36-6 in the latter.

Wilson is also part of U-Hi’s two winning relay teams, the 400 in 49.08, the 800 in 1:46.36.

A key member of the teams is the GSL’s dominant sprinter Katharine Hough, who won the 100 in 12.16 and 200 in 25.85.

Syd Perno topped 40-feet for the first time to win the shot put.

The biggest blow to the Titans was the loss of distance runner Lindsay Daehlin who suffered a stress fracture last week and didn’t compete.

CV’s boys have 15 spots in various events, led by pole vaulters Ryon Triplett and Joel Gehrett who finished first and second in district competition. Triplett had a personal best 14-feet.

The Bear 1,600 meter relay team ran 3:24.99 to win easily thanks in part to Andy Whipple who was also second at 50.42 in the open 400 meter event and Ryan Strickland who ran 50.69 for fourth.

They are joined on the relay by Mark Hann CV’s 300 meter hurdles champion and sophomore Robby Warnock who placed second at 1:57.96 in the 800.

“We’re in really good shape,” said Coach Chuck Bowden. “They have one of the fastest times in state. Mark can run right with the other two and Robby is picking it up another level.”

U-Hi’s boys have 14 spots in the regional including two-time district high jump champion Craig Allen, double hurdles qualifier Terry Coy and double jump qualifier Mike Pugh.

Among CV girls 13 spots are sophomore 400 meter champion and 200 runnerup Whitney Schmaljohn, two-event runnerup Sandra White in the 1,600 and 800 at 5:13.09 and 2:19.79 and yet another district high jump champion in Evergreen ninth grader Marie Cox who cleared 5-foot-1.

Boys golfing sextet to state

Six Valley golfers have qualified for their respective state tournaments next week.

Three schools have advanced two golfers each, including Greater Spokane League district runnerup Matt Johnson, who shot rounds of 75 and 74, and fourth-placer Tim McIlhenny, who shot 73 and 81 for University High School.

CV’s Luke Stavros shared fourth and Evergreen Junior High ninth grader Kyle Schwahn overcame a late start this year to finish seventh among GSL athletes with rounds of 78 and 79.

Making inroads against a dominant Clarkston team which claimed four of seven Frontier League state berths were West Valley’s Jason Whitney who finished third with a two-round total 147 and Shaun Murray who shared fifth place at 154.

Titan girls settle for less

University’s softball team, second during the regular season, settled for much less during district play.

Already qualified for regionals, the Titans will go as a fourth-seed after losing to Rogers and North Central and face the Big Nine champion.

The Titans lost identical 5-2 games, including to the Pirates when a twoout error and misplayed fly ball enabled Rogers to score three sixth inning runs and reach the district finals.

U-Hi led 1-0 after an inning and tied the game in the fourth on Angel Whalen’s RBI single before disaster struck.

SEG gymnasts score at state

Spokane Elite Gymnastics Level 9 girls team finished sixth at state to qualify for regionals in Seattle.

Out of 50 gymnasts in the 14-15 age group, Tara Hulbert placed eighth on bars and beam. Brooke Bishop was sixth on floor exercise in the 12-13 age group with a 9.15 score.

At Level 8, Alisa Brandle was 10th on floor exercise at state.

All 10 members of the club’s Levels 5 and 6 have qualified for sectionals by compiling scores of 32.0 all around in two meets during the season, in preparation for this weekend’s state meet in Issaquah.

Included are Casey Dobyns, Sally Chandler, Alix Herr, Melissa Alderman, Donna Vicena, Shannon Castle, Carmen Vicena, Danielle Brinkley and Vanessa Cordova.

Cordova was fourth on vault, fifth on bars and had an all-around score of 35.15 at sectionals.

Also qualifying for state was 7-year-old Amy Brandle.
