Compiled From Wire Services

A recently fired employee opened fire at a tool factory Wednesday, killing three people and wounding three others, police said.

Police Chief Will Annarino said three people were dead and the gunman was in custody after the shootings at the Union Butterfield Division plant in south Asheville.

The gunman, a “disgruntled employee” fired from the company Monday, gave himself up peacefully to officers, Annarino said.

Eyewitnesses said the gunman was armed with several weapons.

The plant makes machine tools and industrial tools.

Merrell Gregory, a spokeswoman at Memorial Mission Hospital, said three injured people were brought there.

Asheville is a town of 60,000 in western North Carolina.
