Davenport Takes Home Softball Title

Brandy Rodenbough’s two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning Thursday lifted Davenport to a 9-7 win over Springdale in the District 7-B softball title game at Franklin Park.

Alyson Iverson started the seventh with a solo homer for the Gorillas, who won their second consecutive district title. Angie Nicholls retired the Chargers in the bottom of the seventh, saving the game for Rachel Jones.

Davenport advances as the top seed to the State B Tournament, Friday and Saturday at Yakima. Springdale qualifies as No. 2.

Selkirk defeated Northwest Christian 13-12 for the third seed to state. NWC advances as No. 4. Selkirk clinched its state berth by scoring a run in the top of the seventh during a 7-6 win over Inchelium.

Basketball

More than 2,500 teams have entered the sixth annual Hoopfest 3-on-3 tournament.

By registration deadline, May 28, Hoopfest organizers expect another 1,000 teams.

The event in downtown Spokane, which could become the largest street tournament in the country this year, drew 3,067 teams a year ago.

TV sports

Rick Lukens has been promoted to sports director at KXLY-TV. He will continue to anchor the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts and report and produce the feature “Lukens at Large.”

Women’s crew

Washington State University’s varsity four competes against Washington for the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Saturday at Palo Alto, Calif.

The Cougars then travel to Sacramento to join other teams for the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, at which WSU has the No. 2 seeding in three of four events.

Idaho baseball

Coeur d’Alene defeated Post Falls, 9-2, and Lewiston edged Sandpoint, 6-5, in the A-1 Region I tournament in Post Falls.

CdA (13-11) will play Lewiston (20-5) in the championship game Saturday at 11 a.m. at McEuen Field in CdA with the winner advancing to the state playoffs as region’s top seed.
