Strong Families Make Strong Nation Pro-Involvement: Future Depends On Christian Voices Being Heard

The Christian Coalition’s Contract with American Families is for every citizen:

Who is fed up with hypersensitive liberals policing our public displays of faith, deciding how we raise and educate our families, and constantly demanding more tax dollars.

Who is sickened by the decline of this great nation into the greatest debtor nation ever - a world leader in violent crime, divorce, voluntary abortions and illegal drug use.

Who is tired of values-neutral public education that promotes self esteem over the three R’s, mocks religion, undercuts chastity, and produces illiterate graduates.

Who is amazed by the hypocrisy of those who embrace freedom of speech but denounce student-led prayer at high school graduations; who fret about wolves, forests and abused children but say nothing about 17,000 annual third-trimester abortions; who criticize public schools but shackle attempts to expand school choices.

The Contract with American Families certainly isn’t perfect. But it does provide 10 suggestions - not commandments - designed to strengthen the most important unit in a democratic society: the family.

As the family goes, said Pope John Paul II, so goes the nation.

The contract would strengthen families by, among other things, offering a $500 tax credit per child and Individual Retirement Accounts for homemakers, by cracking down on pornography, by guaranteeing local control of education, and by protecting parental rights.

Of course, liberal Democrats have lashed out at the challenge from the religious right. For years, they’ve pushed a myopic social agenda that has led to massive debt, a subculture of dependent poor, and government intrusion into every area of our lives.

But social reformers never have liked competition from people inspired by religious zeal. William Wilberforce, an 18th-century Englishman, was hated because he believed that “Christ must be at the heart of social progress.”

Wilberforce lost his health during his successful 20-year parliamentary fight to rid the British Empire of man’s worst inhumanity to man: slavery.

Let’s hope the framers of the Contract with American Families are as persistent and of the same mettle as their religious forefather. America’s future depends on it.
