‘Motor Voter’ Law Boosts Registrations

Nearly 2 million Americans have registered to vote since the “motor voter” law, easing registration, took effect almost five months ago, Attorney General Janet Reno said Friday.

“The law promised to open the doors to the democratic process, and now it is delivering on that promise,” Reno said in a statement marking the second anniversary of President Clinton’s signing of the National Voter Registration Act.

In the first three months of this year, Alabama registered 42,900 people compared with only 23,000 during the same period last year, Reno said. Georgia registered 181,000 in January-March compared with only 85,000 in all of 1994. And North Carolina is registering more than 30,000 citizens a month, compared with 6,000 a month in 1991, Reno said.
