Balanced Pirates Earn State Berth

AAA softball

Traci Moore pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning with three strikeouts, and Shannon Zahrowski and Charlotte Perry had run-scoring singles in a three-run fifth as Rogers defeated Wenatchee 4-3 for the Region IV-AAA fastpitch softball title at Moses Lake.

Rogers (21-5) became the first Greater Spokane League team to win the regional title during its four-year run. The Pirates, Wenatchee and Richland, which defeated University 6-2 in the consolation game, qualified for next weekend’s State AAA Tournament at Spokane’s Franklin Park.

Rogers outscored tournament opposition 25-8 in three games. The Pirates had seven extra-base hits for the tourney, and Zahrowski went 6-for-10 with five RBIs.

Against Wenatchee, Rogers trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth. The Pirates scored in the second when Perry and Teanna Scott had back-to-back triples.

Jen Wells singled to lead off the Rogers fifth. After an error, Moore (20-5) sacrificed the runners to second and third. Another error scored Wells, then Zahrowski’s single tied the game and Perry’s put Rogers ahead.

Wenatchee had runners at second and third in the seventh before Moore struck out the side.

Rogers swarmed Big Nine Conference No. 1-seeded Richland 12-1 to open its day. Moore pitched a two-hitter and went 2-for-3. Angie Vulcano was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Gena Greenside went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

In the third-place game for the final state spot, Amy Kobelski’s two-out, bases-clearing triple in the sixth broke a 2-all tie and lifted Richland over U-Hi. Stephanie Shelton was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two steals for U-Hi.

Jamie Fox (17-6) put the Titans in the consolation game by pitching a 7-0 three-hitter against Moses Lake and a 6-0 four-hitter against North Central. NC had begun the day with a 4-0 loss to Wenatchee.

U-Hi’s Sally Jamison had four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the first, to eliminate Moses Lake. Against NC, U-Hi’s Stephani Shelton was 2-for-4 and scored twice, while Devon Baaken went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

GSL champion Mead was eliminated by Richland, 4-3, in the game to decide U-Hi’s opponent in the consolation. Mead began the day with a 4-3 win over Eisenhower.
