Yankees Owner Mulls More Moves

New York Times

It was his first visit of the season to Yankee Stadium, but don’t think George Steinbrenner hasn’t kept tabs on his club. His two main concerns before the start of Sunday’s New York YankeesBaltimore Orioles game: the mounting list of injuries and Danny Tartabull’s quiet bat.

Steinbrenner, recuperating from surgery on a detached retina in his right eye, said the absence of Paul O’Neill coupled with Tartabull’s .230 batting average coming into Sunday has deprived the club of power.

“We haven’t had the basher in the middle,” Steinbrenner said. “O’Neill, we’ve missed sorely. Danny Tartabull has not given us what we’ve needed.”

Even with the highest payroll in baseball, Steinbrenner would not rule out the possibility of acquiring a highpriced starting pitcher.

“We’re looking at all factors,” he said. “There has been no restraint on Gene Michael on the amount of money he has spent to date.”
