Chirac Will Visit Clinton In June

Associated Press

France’s new president, Jacques Chirac, will visit President Clinton in Washington on June 14, one day before the start of the annual economic summit of industrialized democracies, the White House announced Monday.

Clinton wanted to have a get-acquainted meeting with Chirac before the Group of Seven economic summit, to be held this year from June 15-17 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, aides said.

Chirac is the incoming president of the European Union.

Chirac was inaugurated as president last week after beating Socialist Lionel Jospin in a May 7 runoff.

He succeeds Francois Mitterrand, who served two seven-year terms.

White House spokesman Mike McCurry said Clinton and Chirac would “discuss various issues of common interest.”
