Clarkston In Drivers’ Seat

From Staff And Wire Reports

State AA golf

Frontier League golfers are in second place after the first round of the WIAA/U.S. Bank State AA boys and girls golf tournaments.

Jason Whitney of West Valley shot a 75 Monday to join five other golfers one stroke behind Peninsula’s Jason Cupit.

Among those tied for second at the par-72 Lipoma Firs Golf Club was Matt Harnish of Peninsula, giving the Gulls the inside track for the team title.

Clarkston, the defending team champion, moved all four of its golfers into the final round. Only the top 40 and ties among 80 golfers advanced to today’s second round, which determines the team championship.

Sedro Woolley’s Kelli Kamamura had a 73 to lead the girls tournament, putting her six strokes ahead of Frontier League champion Terra Lawson. Brenda Hall of East Valley, the runnerup last year, had an 85.

Defending champion Andrea Hahn of South Whidbey was disqualified. Hahn gave her scorer a wrong number - a par 4 instead of a bogey 5 on hole No. 18. After attesting to her final score, she self-reported the mistake and was disqualified after signing an 82 card.
