Fugitives Arrested Without Further Gunfire

A Kansas murder suspect and his brother, sought since a Friday shootout with a sheriff’s sergeant, were captured Monday in the woods along the Cowlitz River.

Following a citizen’s tip, officers tracked Terry Terhune, 26, and Curtis Terhune, 29, to a brushy spot along the river near the retirementvacation community of High Valley, just northeast of Packwood. The two had been camping in the area, Lewis County Sheriff John McCroskey said.

The brothers had knives and one had an empty pistol holster, but both surrendered without incident, the sheriff said.

The Terhunes were taken to the Lewis County Jail to be booked for investigation of felony assault in connection with Friday’s shootout.

Terry Terhune, wanted on a Kansas murder warrant, could also be extradited to that state, McCroskey said.

The manhunt began Friday night. Sheriff’s deputies were preparing to serve the Kansas murder warrant and stopped a van carrying the Terhunes, but the van took off.

A sheriff’s sergeant shot out the van’s tires and gave chase. As Terry Terhune drove, Curtis Terhune threw potatoes and a gallon of oil at the pursuing cruiser, McCroskey said. Then Curtis Terhune fired bullets into the cruiser’s windshield, light bar and hood, McCroskey said. The officer wasn’t hit.

The van turned onto a Forest Service road and crashed in a ditch. As the Terhunes ran away, they fired several more shots, McCroskey said.
