A champion ballroom dancer, her badly burned body swathed in a surgical body suit, testified that her dance-partner husband doused her in gasoline and set her on fire because she refused to give him money for gambling.
Stacey Withers told a magistrates court Monday that her husband, Michael Withers, was drunk when he began threatening her last November.
“He walked towards me and tipped the jerry can of petrol over my head. He then walked around me throwing the petrol on my arms and on my back,” Stacey Withers said.
“He told me not to move or I was dead. He then reached into the kitchen and grabbed a cigarette lighter. … He ignited the flame on my T-shirt and I went up in fire.”
Withers, who pleaded innocent, covered his face with his hands and wept during his wife’s testimony. He was ordered to stand trial for attempted murder.
Stacey Withers suffered third-degree burns over 60 percent of her body.
