Dodgers Net Blazing Kelly

Compiled From Wire Services

National League

The Los Angeles Dodgers needed more speed in their lineup, preferably from a potential leadoff hitter. The Montreal Expos needed a first baseman and another cut in their team payroll.

Both teams filled their needs Tuesday with a trade that sent center fielder Roberto Kelly and pitcher Joey Eischen to the Dodgers for Henry Rodriguez and Jeff Treadway.

“I think we improved our speed and our defense,” said Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda. “Kelly is better defensively and he’s faster.”

Kelly was acquired by the Expos in spring training as part of a threefor-one deal that sent Marquis Grissom to Atlanta.

Rodriguez was hitting .263 with one homer and 10 RBIs. Last year, his first full big-league season, he hit .268 with eight homers and 49 RBIs.

Sanders on trial

A stadium guard who arrested Deion Sanders testified he didn’t like the way the Cincinnati Reds center fielder talked to him during their run-in.

Herb Kohus said when he stopped Sanders from driving his motor scooter through a pedestrian-only gate, Sanders told him, “Don’t you know who I am?” and “You can’t arrest me.”

Sanders, 27, is charged with resisting arrest, driving without a license, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to comply with a police officer’s order.
