Some 200,000 people in Auckland hailed the winning crew of the America’s Cup, a victory New Zealanders liken to the conquest of Mount Everest by compatriot Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953.

Downtown stores and offices were festooned with bunting, flags and balloons in a celebration in which possibly one-fifth of Auckland’s population joined.

Joe King, a 300-pound offensive lineman, whose career at Alabama was derailed by suspensions and substance abuse, was sought for robbing a Tuscaloosa, Ala., bank.
