Death Row Inmate May Represent Self

Compiled From Wire Services

A former minister sentenced to die for killing an abortion doctor should be allowed to represent himself in appeals from death row, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Circuit Judge Elzie Sanders recommended that the Florida Supreme Court permit Paul Hill to handle his own appeals of two death sentences in the 1994 shotgun slayings of an abortion doctor and his escort outside a clinic in Pensacola.

The U.S. Supreme Court has established that the right of selfrepresentation extends even to death row inmates, but state Supreme Court officials could not recall such a precedent in Florida.
