Robert Briscoe Northridge, Calif.

A memorial service for Robert H. Briscoe, 84, was held in California. Mr. Briscoe, a former Spokane resident, died April 10.

He was born in Meyers Falls, Wash., now Kettle Falls.

He graduated from Washington State University in 1932 with a degree in mathematics and physics. He taught for two years at Whitworth College and later worked for Zellerbach Paper Co.

He received a master’s degree from WSU.

He served as an environmental consultant to the 1974 world’s fair in Spokane for one year and then began teaching at the Eastern Washington University business school. He retired in 1978.

After he retired, he and his wife, Laura Lee, spent the summer months at Priest Lake, Idaho, and the winter months in San Diego. In 1987 they moved to LaMesa, Calif.

He was a member of Park Heights Baptist Church, where he directed choirs, taught Sunday school and served as deacon.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years; one son, Roger Briscoe of Scotch Plains, N.J., Dennis Briscoe of San Diego, and Barry Briscoe of Kent, Wash.; two daughters, Judy Larsen of Simi Valley, Calif., and Bonnie Dalton of Portland; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Virgil Baumgarden Spokane

Service for Virgil Eugene Baumgarden, 58, was held Thursday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Baumgarden, who died Monday, was born in Osceola, Mo.

He had lived in Spokane for more than 25 years and had worked at a sawmill.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars and was a member of Ridgeview Christian Center.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Alberta; five sons, Ken, Mike, Dennis and Ron Baumgarden all of Spokane, and Virgil Baumgarden of Deep Creek, Wash.; four sisters, Wilma Krumm of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mary Meddock of Seattle, Pat Fowler of Kansas City, Kan., and Donna Hawkers of Miami, Okla.; three brothers, Dennis Fowler of Lockwood, Mo., Billy Fowler of Neosho, Mo., and Raymond Baumgarden of Clinton, Mo.; and 14 grandchildren.

Pearl Smith Spokane

Memorial service for Pearl L. Smith, 90, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith, who died Monday, was born in Minnesota.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Wapato, Wash., from 1935 until 1972.

She was a member of the Lady Lions.

Her husband, T.J. Smith, died last year.

Survivors include one son, Dick Smith of Seattle; one sister, Thelma McVay of Spokane; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Leonard Dotson Spokane

Memorial service for Leonard Willie Dotson, 75, was held Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Dotson, who died Monday, was born in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was a millwright in MiltonFreewater, Ore., and moved to Spokane 26 years ago.

Mr. Dotson served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by four stepdaughters, Carol Morales and Evelyn Ford, both of Spokane, and Deborah DesJarlais and Karen Chapin, both of Elk; four stepsons, Richard Hearder of Gypsum, Colo., and Curt Elkington, Mike Connors and Patrick Connors, all of Spokane; one sister, Anita Spangler of Defiance, Ohio; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

J.C. ‘Cliff’ Cochran Pullman

Service for James Clifford “Cliff” Cochran, 83, is set for 2 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman. Burial will be at Pullman City Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cochran, who died Tuesday, was born in Chicago. He moved to Pullman with his family in 1914.

He worked as assistant manager at Pullman Laundry until it was sold. He later worked for the athletic department at Washington State University, for a local plumber and for the Pullman and Johnson Union Grain Growers.

After he retired, he worked part time as a maintenance man at Palouse Hills Nursing Center.

He was a member of the Pullman Moose Lodge and served for 34 years on the Pullman Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ethel; one son, Jim Cochran of Pullman; four daughters, Susan Clark of Palouse, Wash., Patsy Sperry of Colton, Wash., Linda Cutler of Ritzville, Wash., and Margaret Munden of Sun City, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren, eight greatgrandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or Palouse Hills Nursing Center.

Margaret Zuchetto Deer Park

Memorial service for Margaret Helen Sleighter Zuchetto, 80, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Deer Park. Graveside service will follow at 11:20 a.m. at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Zuchetto, who was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, died May 13.

She graduated from Deer Park High School.

She retired as a district manager with World Book Encyclopedia after 27 years. She had also worked as a telephone operator in Deer Park. She and her husband had previously owned the Deer Park Bowling Alley.

She was a longtime Spokane resident.

Her husband, Normi “Spud” Zuchetto, died in 1970.

Survivors include one son, Arthur Zuchetto of Deer Park; one sister, Uldene Brown of Deer Park; four grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the Spokane Humane Society.

Samuel Yates Deer Park

No service will be held for Samuel Louis “Sam” Yates, 84, at his request. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery. Lauer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Yates, a longtime Deer Park resident, died May 19.

He was born in Sandusky, Mich.

He was a self-employed painter and paper hanger.

Mr. Yates is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dorothy Yates; one daughter, Nancy Yates of Ypsilanti, Mich.; one stepson, Richard Huggett of Seattle; one brother, Mark Yates of West Branch, Mich.; two sisters, Violet Brunette of Ypsilanti and Helen Cooper of Sun City, Calif.

Hazel Dibble Spokane

Graveside service for Hazel M. Dibble, 84, will be at 11 a.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park Mausoleum. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Harrington, Wash., Mrs. Dibble died Tuesday.

She was a member of Harrington Methodist Church.

Her husband, Harold Dibble, died in 1977.

She is survived by one son, Don Dibble of Spokane; three daughters, Darlene Flinn, Dixie Corigliano and Diane Lust, all of Spokane; one sister, Margaret Davis of Sacramento, Calif; nine grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter.

Jesse Bernstein Jr. Spokane

Service for Jesse T. Bernstein Jr., 69, is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bernstein, who died Monday, was born in Winfield, La.

He served with the Army during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He worked at Washington Brick and Lime Co. as a brick mason and had worked for the Davenport Hotel for several years as parking manager.

He had lived in Spokane since 1947.

He is survived by two sons, Jesse Bernstein of Alaska and Brian Bernstein of New Orleans; three brothers, Thadius Edwards of Winfield, Woodrow Bernstein of Arlington, Texas, and Lonzo Bernstein of Spokane; five sisters, Jessie Squall, Ollie Canton, Elizabeth Wilson and Gloria Bernstein, all of Spokane, and Lois Bernstein of Seattle; and one grandson.

Harriet Newberg Bremerton

Service for Harriet Jean Newberg, 70, was held Thursday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sequim, Wash. Burial will follow at Dungeness Cemetery in Sequim. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Newberg, who was born in Sequim, died Sunday.

She and her husband, Donald Newberg, lived in Spokane from 1947 until 1969, when they moved to Italy, and again from 1978 until 1994, when they moved to Sequim.

She was a part-time librarian in Spokane for many years and volunteered at the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald Newberg of Bremerton; one son, Nicholas Newberg of San Marcos, Calif.; two daughters, Donna Newberg of Seattle and LeeAnn Fink of Silverdale, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Spokane.

Dollie Randall Nine Mile Falls

Service for Dollie M. Randall, 92, was held Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Davenport, Wash. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport. Strate Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Randall died Sunday.

She was a member of Davenport Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the North Star Grange.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Lee Randall, died in 1976.

She is survived by one son, Lee Randall of Davenport; one daughter, Lillie Ford of Buhl, Idaho; one brother, Archie McCullough of Oakland, Ore.; one sister, Goldie Peterson of Klamath Falls, Ore.; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and nine greatgreat-grandchildren.

David Bafus Cheney

Service for David R. Bafus, 48, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John (Wash.) United Methodist Church. Cremation will follow with inurnment at St. John Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bafus, who was born in St. John, died from injuries suffered in an auto accident Monday.

He served in the Army. After his discharge, he worked for the railroad.

He most recently was a track inspector for Burlington Northern Railroad.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; one son, Samuel Bafus of Prineville, Ore.; one daughter, Sarah Bafus of Cheney; his mother, Amelia Bafus of St. John; and one brother, Harvey Bafus of Thornton, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Cemetery.

Bela ‘Bill’ Toth Spokane

Memorial service for Bela “Bill” Toth, 89, was held Thursday at the Masonic Temple.

A former Spokane teacher, Mr. Toth died May 18.

He was born in Hungary and immigrated to the United States in 1907.

He taught in Priest River, Idaho, and was superintendent of schools in Springdale, Wash., and Rose Lake, Idaho. He also taught at Havermale Junior High School and Rogers High School in Spokane before retiring in 1969.

Mr. Toth was a certified flight instructor and was an officer in the Civil Air Patrol.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the El Katif Shrine.

His wife, Amy Toth, died in 1981.

There are no surviving family members.

Robert Mallert Spokane

Service for Robert A. “Bob” Mallert, 49, was held Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Mallert died Tuesday.

He was born in Spokane and was a longtime Spokane resident and restaurant owner..

He is survived by two sons, Sean Mallert of Liberty Lake and Shay Mallert of Spokane; one sister, Dianne Oberst of Spokane; one half-sister, Gina Gabica of Nampa, Idaho; and his former wife, Carol Mallert of Spokane.

Helen Greer Hauser Lake, Idaho

Graveside inurnment for Helen Ruby Greer, 89, will be held later in Oregon. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Greer died Monday. She was born in Echo, S.D., and had lived in Spokane from 1956 until 1994, when she moved to Hauser Lake.

She was a homemaker and had been a riveter in the Portland shipyards during World War II.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and enjoyed animals, gardening, cooking and sewing.

Her second husband, Harry Greer, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald Jacobson of Hauser Lake and Norman Jacobson of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren.

Marie LePard Coeur d’Alene

Service for Marie LePard, 94, is planned for 3:30 p.m. today at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Private burial will precede at Forest Cemetery. Pastor Kathryn LePard will officiate at the service.

Mrs. LePard, who was born in Norway, died Wednesday.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene from Sandpoint in 1906.

She attended Kinman Business University in Spokane and was active in the Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, George LePard, died in 1976.

Survivors include two sons, James LePard of Coeur d’Alene, and George LePard of Spokane; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Watkin Williams Kingston, Idaho

Service for Watkin Meirion Williams, 80, will be at 3 p.m. today at Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Shoshone Funeral Services in Kellogg.

Mr. Williams died Tuesday. He was born in Wardner, Idaho, worked for Bunker Hill Co., and retired from the machine shop after 47 years.

He was a member of the Bunker Hill 20-year Club and the Rose Lake Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene; one daughter, Betty Lavigne of Kellogg; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
