Emi Endo Staff writer

Barbara Woodall is grateful that some boys and young men in her neighborhood helped extinguish a fire on her property Monday.

Woodall, who lives in the 11900 block of East 26th, said that a play fort in her back yard went up in flames at about 3:30 p.m.

“They grabbed the hoses in the yard and worked on putting it out,” she said. Woodall was not home at the time.

David Takisaki, 8, a student at South Pines Elementary, saw the fire first. His brother, Paul Takisaki, 11, also a South Pines student, and University High School senior Craig Reisdorph, and Jason Stout and Brad Walker - both recent U-Hi graduates - started spraying the burning fort with water.

Firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire.

The fire also shorted an overhead power wire. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Fire spreads to trailer

A pile of yard and building waste ignited Sunday, causing about $2,000 in damage to a nearby trailer.

Allen Arnold, who lives in the 11200 block of 36th, told authorities he heard a noise shortly before noticing the fire at about 1:45 a.m.

A pile of waste, with dirt on top, was burning from the bottom.

Heat damaged the metal sides and paint burned off about half of the 8-by-20 foot trailer.

The cause of the fire was likely spontaneous combustion.

Two of the three people they contacted in the parking lot had warrants for their arrest.

Richard McBride had a warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of possession of marijuana.
