Don’t Breed Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes lay eggs in warm, standing water and can breed well in many areas around the home.

Flower pots, plastic tarps, drain pans on air conditioners, wheelbarrows and other containers are favorite spots for the insects. They are attracted to light, body warmth and carbon dioxide, or exhaled breath.

The Spokane County Health District offers these tips on controlling mosquitoes:

Repair window and door screens.

Install screens around porches, decks or gazebos.

Do not over-water lawns and gardens.

Dispose of trash promptly.

Keep rain gutters clean.

Change water in troughs, fountains or bird baths twice a week. Remove old tires or other items that collect water.

Fill tree holes and remove old stumps.

Use spray repellants, sparingly, on exposed skin.

Avoid electric bug “zappers” because they kill more mosquito-eating insects than mosquitoes.
