Gang fights left two Cook County Jail inmates dead and about 26 injured, authorities said Sunday.
“It was hand-to-hand combat. They were fighting with broom handles and homemade knives,” sheriff’s department spokeswoman Sally Daly said. She didn’t know what touched off either encounter.
After the second fight, the maximum security section - 25 tiers and 1,000 inmates - was placed on lockdown and guards searched for weapons.
Vincent Cox, 29, awaiting trial on a drug possession charge, was stabbed to death during a brawl that spread to two tiers of the jail Saturday night. Allen Fields, 19, jailed on murder charges, was fatally stabbed during a fight in a recreation area Sunday morning, Daly said.
