Sri Lanka’s President Warns Media
The president threatened Sunday to impose restrictions on the media, claiming news coverage of Sri Lanka’s civil war has been irresponsible.
“We take the war situation seriously, and the media should play a responsible role. Trying to analyze military secrets is advantageous to the enemy,” said President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
“If the newspapers continue to behave in a manner which is not in the national interest at this time of grave national crisis, the government will have to take note and consider necessary action,” Kumaratunga said. She did not elaborate.
