Two Climbers Injured In Fall On Mount Hood

From Staff And Wire Reports

Two Washington state men suffered broken shoulders Sunday when they fell nearly 1,000 feet down the side of Mount Hood.

George Garcia, 46, of Tacoma, Wash., and Craig Sleight, 38, of Enumclaw, Wash., were climbing the Luthold Coulier route up Mount Hood about 8 a.m. when Garcia slipped, dragging Sleight with him, Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies said.

Garcia was listed in serious condition at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, and Sleight was in satisfactory condition at Mount Hood Medical Center in Gresham, according to nursing supervisors.

Another climber with a cellular telephone called the sheriff’s department, and Garcia was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

Sleight was transported by ambulance.
