Israel, Syria Discuss Golan Heights Pullout

Israel and Syria have been holding secret talks on a possible Israeli pullout from the Golan Heights, it was reported Monday, but Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin said any pullout would have to wait for an Israeli referendum.

Israeli news reports said officials had been holding secret talks in Paris and London over the past two years, and that participants forwarded written understandings to Rabin.

Participants included Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Fares Assad, a nephew of Syrian President Hafez Assad, as well as officials, business people and academics from both countries, Israel TV said.
