Winfield’s First Hr Propels Cleveland

Associated Press

American League

Fifteen games into the Cleveland leg of his career, Dave Winfield had no home runs, no RBIs, a .212 batting average and an out-ofwhack swing.

One pitch from Wilson Alvarez in the sixth inning Monday changed all that.

“My first home run, first RBI, and to help us get back in the game. It was really special,” Winfield said after his three-run home run helped the Indians overcome a six-run deficit in a 7-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox in Cleveland.

Cleveland scored all its runs from the sixth inning on, finally taking the lead on Tony Pena’s eighth-inning RBI double. It marked the eighth time this year the Indians won a game in the eighth inning or later; they’ve trailed at some point in 12 of their 19 wins.

The Indians signed the 43-year-old Winfield in April because of their problems against lefthanders: They were 14-19 in games started by lefthanders a year ago. But it’s a part-time job, and Winfield hasn’t fully adjusted to it.

“It’s not real easy, but I’m going to do well with it,” Winfield said. “Whenever they need me, I’ll be there. The last week or so, I’ve been hitting really good.”

Red Sox 9, Athletics 6

Oakland

Mike Macfarlane’s threerun homer highlighted a sixrun Boston fifth inning as the Red Sox took advantage of eight walks to defeat Oakland.

The Red Sox sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, which also included a two-run double by Tim Naehring and an RBI single by John Valentin.

Twins 7, Brewers 5

Milwaukee

Pedro Munoz homered and drove in three runs as Minnesota beat Milwaukee, handing the Brewers their eighth straight home loss.

Milwaukee’s eight consecutive home defeats is one short of the franchise mark set in 1990. The Brewers have dropped four straight and 12 of 15.

Blue Jays 5, Tigers 4 Toronto Lance Parrish hit two home runs and David Cone scattered seven hits over eight innings to lead Toronto to victory over Detroit, the Tigers’ third straight loss.

Cone (4-3) allowed two runs, struck out seven and walked three in his fifth straight win over the Tigers.

Royals 12, Rangers 0

Kansas City

Gary Gaetti hit a grand slam and a solo home run, giving him six homers in five games, as Kansas City won its fifth straight, beating Texas.

Gaetti drove in six runs and also had a single and double. Wally Joyner drove in four runs as the Royals stopped the Rangers’ winning streak at four.

Angels 6, Orioles 5

Anaheim, Calif.

Tim Salmon tied the score with his second career grand slam and J.T. Snow added a solo homer as California beat Baltimore.

Shawn Boskie (3-0) overcame a shaky start to help the Angels increase their lead in the A.L. West to 2 games. The right-hander pitched seven innings, allowing four runs, eight hits and no walks while striking out two.
