Jackhammer Pierces Gas Line

From Staff And Wire Reports

A construction worker’s jackhammer punctured a downtown gas line Tuesday afternoon, forcing authorities to close streets and evacuate two neighboring buildings.

No one was hurt in the accident, which left a 1-inch hole in the 12-inch gas main at Riverside and Post, Spokane Fire Department officials said.

A hazardous materials team plugged the hole within a half-hour after arriving at the scene.

Officials said winds helped dissipate the gas, reducing the chance of an explosion.
