Governor’s Cup Now Includes Nic

From Staff And Wire Reports

Gov. Phil Batt announced Tuesday that the Governor’s Cup scholarships this year will go to vocational-technical students, including those at North Idaho College.

The prestigious scholarships, previously targeted at keeping Idaho’s top high school graduates from choosing out-of-state universities, will now give vo-tech students up to $3,000 per year for up to three years. Students at the NIC School of Applied Technology would be eligible.

Money for the Governor’s Cup Scholarships is raised at an annual golf tournament at Sun Valley. This year’s tournament raised more than $100,000.

“We do think that in these changing times we should put more emphasis on vocational-technical education,” Batt said. Workers displaced from Idaho’s resource-based industries might be able to use the scholarships for retraining, he said.

Candidates must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better and must be a full-time vo-tech student.

Application forms will be available from high school and technical college counselors, or by calling the state Board of Education at 334-2270.
