Clinton Talks Politics With Author Of Book

Compiled From Wire Services

President Clinton is a big fan of a new book that casts him as Zorro - not the swashbuckling horseman, but master of a zigzag political strategy that can help Democrats keep control of the White House.

Clinton spent nearly an hour on the phone with the author of “Values Matter Most,” confessing his political sins and declaring himself a centrist Democrat, according to author Ben Wattenberg.

Among other things, Clinton took blame for turning moderate Democrats off by behaving more like a prime minister than a president, ultimately creating “a cardboard cutout of himself” after the 1994 election, Wattenberg said Wednesday.

“He had been thinking through this stuff pretty carefully and he’s a great reader and this had resonated with him,” said Wattenberg, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.
