Wenatchee Holds Record, For Now

O’Dea established what some had considered a record with its eighth shutout last week. Not so fast.

An alert reader called to say that Wenatchee had a nine-game, regularseason shutout string in 1973.

Wenatchee won eight Big Nine Conference games and one non-league game by a margin of 383-0.

The Panthers then beat Fort Vancouver 10-7 in a first-round playoff game with Steve Dils scoring the TD for the losers. Wenatchee next blanked Evergreen of Vancouver, with Jack Thompson at QB, then lost to Kentridge 26-24 in the championship.

O’Dea has outscored its foes 339-0 and faces No. 4 Eastside Catholic in its finale.

Numbers game

Junior quarterback Drew Miller of Lakes in Tacoma has knocked former Shadle Park great Mark Rypien down in the Class AAA record book.

With one game remaining for the non-playoff Lancers, Miller has completed 202 of 321 passes for 2,921 yards, 37 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Rypien set Class AAA records of 202 completions and 2,913 yards in 1979. Miller is one TD short of the regular-season allclass record and 116 yards short of the yardage record.

Also bumped from the AAA record book is Billy Joe Hobert, who threw for 61 TDs by the time he finished at Puyallup in 1988. Miller has 64. Bobby Lucht of Eatonville finished with a state and national career record of 132 last year.

Last week, when Miller threw for more than 300 yards for the eighth time this season, he completed 18 passes to senior Mike Rigell, a single-game all-class record. The previous high was 17 by Ron Wold of Ballard in 1972 and Matt Coleman of Anacortes last year. Rigell has 74 catches for 1,190 yards and 16 TDs. Rigell needs one more TD to tie the Class AAA season mark established by Denny Thurston of Puyallup in 11 games in 1986.
