Valley Plays Explore Aging, Carl Sandburg

From For the record (Saturday, November 4, 1995): The opening date of “The Old Lady’s Guide to Survival” staged by the ACT theater has been postponed to Nov. 10 due to a recent theft at the theater. The opening date in Friday Weekend entertainment section is incorrect.

The ACT in the Valley presents an acclaimed play about aging, “The Old Lady’s Guide to Survival,” opening tonight and continuing through Nov. 25.

This poignant drama by Mayo Simon was originally produced as part of the Humana Festival in Louisville, Ky., and it had a successful off-Broadway run last season. This will be its first production in the Inland Northwest.

It is described as a warm, funny, touching play about two women who find strength in their friendship as they confront the challenges of age. One woman is facing the threat of blindness; the other, Alzheimer’s disease.

This show is directed by Charles Kenfield, and it features Martha Lou Wheatley-Billeter and Robin Kropff in the lead roles.

General admission tickets are $10, $8 for seniors and students, and are available by calling 921-1706.

The show runs tonight and Saturday and Nov. 10-12, 17-19, and Nov. 24-25. All shows are at 8 p.m., except Nov. 12 and 19, which are 2 p.m. matinees.

The ACT is located at 425 N. Evergreen.

The Valley Repertory Theatre opens this Norman Corwin adaptation of the works of Pulitzerwinning poet Carl Sandburg tonight at 8.

Bette Davis starred in the original New York production. The New York Times called it “Dry in its wit, like a prairie philosopher and passionate in its convictions, like one of the Lord’s prophets.”

This production is directed by Larry Gants.

The show runs tonight, Saturday and Sunday and Nov. 9-12 and Nov. 16-18. Friday and Saturday showtimes are 8 p.m., Thursday showtimes are 7:30 p.m., and Sunday showtimes are 2 p.m.
