Car Plows Into Bank, Kills One Customer

Compiled From Wire Services

A car driven by a 76-year-old man careened through a parking lot, smashing 11 cars, then plowed through a bank’s plate-glass window Friday, crushing one customer to death and injuring five.

Police said Walter Mairow, of suburban Harwood Heights, had just dropped his wife off at a supermarket when he lost control of his 1984 Chrysler LeBaron.

Witnesses said they saw the four-door sedan bash into parked cars on both sides of a lane in a shopping center’s large parking lot.

Then it veered down the lane toward a store, made a left turn and shot ahead about 50 yards toward the bank in the middle of the L-shaped plaza.

Mairow was charged with four traffic violations, posted his driver’s license as bond and was released.
