Nfl Suspends Lett And Holmes For Their Use Of Anabolic Steroids

Compiled From Wire Services

Leon Lett and Clayton Holmes of the Dallas Cowboys were suspended for four games by the NFL on Friday for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

The suspensions were effective immediately and would sideline Lett, a starter at defensive tackle, and Holmes, a reserve cornerback, until Nov. 24, the day after Dallas plays Kansas City. They would be eligible to return for a Dec. 3 home game against Washington.

During their absence, the Cowboys play Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland and Kansas City.

Reports surfaced before last Sunday’s game against Atlanta that at least one Dallas player was in trouble with the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Lett and Holmes became the reported targets by Monday and each missed some practices. Holmes worked out with the team Friday.

Prosecutors in Milpitas, Calif., declined to file charges against San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Dana Stubblefield in connection with an argument that turned into a car theft report.

A Pittsburgh coroner’s jury ruled that five white police officers who arrested Jonny Gramage, who is black, and a cousin of Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Ray Seals, should be charged with homicide in the man’s suffocation death while in custody.
