Furyk Maintains Lead But Pate’s Eight Birdies Vault Him Into Second With Two Others

Compiled From Wire Services

Jim Furyk shot a 2-under-par 71 Saturday to hold off three challengers - Steve Pate, Hale Irwin and Jim McGovern - and hold on to a two-stroke lead after three rounds of the Kapalua International in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Furyk, who started the day with a three-stroke lead over Davis Love III and Russ Cochran, appeared to be on the verge of putting away the 72-hole tournament early by opening up a five-stroke lead after nine holes.

Starting on the back nine at the 7,263-yard Plantation Course on the Island of Maui, Furyk continued his steady play with two birdies and no bogeys.

But he managed to complete the final nine holes in even par to reach the 54-hole mark at 16-under 201.

Pate made the day’s biggest charge with a 63 that featured eight birdies and vaulted him from a five-way tie for 23rd to the three-man group at 203. Irwin and McGovern both had third-round 68s.

Kirk Triplett, formerly of Pullman, shot a third-round 74 to drop seven strokes off the lead.

Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 3-under-par 69 and held a two-shot lead over John Daly, Fuzzy Zoeller and Craig Stadler after two rounds of the $1.9 million Sarazen World Open Championship in Braselton, Ga.

In Milton, Fla., Bruce Devlin and Isao Aoki had 3-under-par 68s and held a one-stroke lead in the rain-shortened Emerald Coast Classic.

Raymond Floyd, who electrified the crowd with a hole-in-one, was tied with Snell Lancaster, DeWitt Weaver and Ed Sneed one stroke behind the leaders.
