Stanford Sweeps WSU With Ease

In front of 1,900 fans at Maples Pavilion, No. 4 Stanford hammered No. 9 Washington State, 15-6, 15-7, 15-8 Saturday night.

With the win, Stanford (15-0 Pac10, 22-2 overall) claims the conference title for the second straight season. WSU is 10-4, 18-4 and in second place in the conference.

Sarah Silvernail led WSU with 11 kills, while no other Cougars had double-figure kills or double-digit digs. Stanford out-hit WSU .336 to .179.

Idaho beat Weber State 16-14, 12-15, 15-6, 15-9 in front of 1,124 fans at Memorial Gym.

All-America candidate Tzvetelina Yanchulova led a Vandals hitting attack as she finished with a matchhigh 24 kills and 15 digs.

Idaho is 11-1 Big Sky, 23-4. Weber State os 4-9, 14-12.

Eastern Washington won its second straight match as Kim Exner had 15 kills and nine digs in defeating Northern Arizona 15-12, 15-9, 8-15, 17-15 in Cheney.

The Eagles (3-9 Big Sky, 8-18) capitalized on 11 Lumberjacks (7-6, 11-10) service errors. In addition, EWU performed well defensively, recording 20 team kills to Northern Arizona’s 10.

Santa Clara defeated Gonzaga 8-15, 15-13, 15-9, 15-13 in West Coast Conference action at GU’s Martin Centre. GU (2-9, 4-24) got 21 kills from Jennifer Kubista and 15 kills from Christy Kubista.

Whitworth swept Lewis & Clark 15-8, 15-12, 15-9 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse as the Pirates raised their record to 5-22. Whitworth got four blocks and 16 assists from Kim Steinbruecker.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth’s 1-0 win over Pacific at Salem, Ore., put the Pirates in the Northwest Conference district title game today against Willamette. The Bearcats defeated Pacific Lutheran 4-1 to advance.

In moving its record to 13-5-1, Whitworth goalie Jennifer Peterson recorded her seventh shutout of the season.

Whitworth got its lone goal when Marilyn Piduch headed in a corner kick by Chrissanne Roseleip.

Men’s soccer

Twenty-fifth ranked George Fox scored three times in 3 minutes after the ejection of Whitworth defender Matt Kinder for a handball and went on to beat the Pirates 3-1 at Newberg, Ore., in the first round of the Northwest Conference district playoffs.

Whitworth was was forced to play a man short for the game. The Pirates finished the season 9-8-1.

Exhibition basketball

The 1995-96 Gonzaga men’s basketball team stopped an alumni crew called the Spokane AAU Old Dogs 102-72 at the Martin Centre.

Lorenzo Rollins came off the bench to pace the Bulldogs with 18 points and starting off guard Kevin Williams added 17.

For the alums, guard John Rillie shot 11 for 20 for a game-high 26 points for the Old Dogs. Jeff Brown, the 1994 WCC player of the year on Gonzaga’s NIT squad, was the only other alum in double figures with 13 points.

Cross country

The Whitworth Pirates men’s and women’s teams finished in sixth place as the school played host to the Northwest Conference of Independent Cross Country Championships.

In individual results, Alex Rolfe of Whitman was the men’s champ, while Whitworth’s Bryan Lynch had the best day of any Pirate, finishing fourth.

For the women, Kathleen Gibson of Whitman earned championship honors. Whitworth’s Dana Ryan had the best day of any Pirate finishing 12th.
