Usc Moves Closer To Rose Bowl Bid

Associated Press

Southern California abandoned its two-quarterback system for the second straight week, although this time coach John Robinson had no choice.

Keyshawn Johnson caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Wachholtz with 39 seconds remaining as the 14th-ranked Trojans eked out a 31-30 victory over Stanford on Saturday at Los Angeles.

Last week, in a 21-21 tie with Washington, Wachholtz was the quarterback who left the rotation as Robinson stayed with Brad Otton, who guided the Trojans to three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Wachholtz played the final three quarters against Stanford after Otton was ineffective and sustained a mild concussion in the opening period. He was taken to USC University Hospital for observation.

Robinson’s pattern had been to play Otton in the first and third quarters and Wachholtz in the second and fourth periods.

USC (5-0-1, 7-1-1) will have a better overall record than No. 15 Washington (4-1-1, 5-3-1), if the teams tie for first place. Every other Pac-10 team has at least two conference losses.
