Women’s Achievements Recognized

Six Spokane leaders will be honored as Women of Achievement during the 14th annual YWCA awards noon luncheon, Nov. 16, at the Crescent Court Ballroom.

The women, their awards by category and their associations are:

Margaret “Peggy” Goodner Tan, Art and Culture, Ballet Arts Academy.

Bobbi Johnson, Business, president and chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries of Spokane.

Donna M. Hanson, Community Service, secretary for Social Ministries for Catholic Diocese of Spokane.

Margaret C. Ross-Thrailkill, Education, retired teacher with Community Colleges of Spokane.

Nancy Fike, Government, board member of the Spokane School District.

Dr. Joan Groschupf Craig, Health Care, staff member of Sacred Heart Medical Center’s Cancer Research Center.

In addition, Shayna Mei Silverstein, a student at Lewis and Clark High School, will receive the 1995 Outstanding Young Woman of Achievement Award.

The Women’s House Project will be honored in the Community Activism category.

Safety first

The Valley Hospital and Medical Center has pledged $33,000 to Spokane Valley school districts to improve or establish security programs in four high schools.

The Valley Hospital Foundation also donated $8,000.

East Valley, West Valley, Central Valley and University high schools will receive the funds. And each of the Valley’s three school districts has applied for state grants to tailor their specific security needs.

“This contribution reflects Valley Hospital’s overall mission of improving the health and safety of those we serve through community partnerships,” said Mike Liepman, Valley Hospital’s chief operating officer.

Classical deserves classical

Holy Names Music Center at Fort Wright will present its second annual scholarship benefit, “A Classical Concert in a Classical Setting,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Davenport Hotel.

The program, Stravinsky’s “A Soldier’s Tale,” will feature State Sen. John Moyer as the narrator and musicians William Berry, Cameron Dunlop, Tracy Gibson Dunlop, Lynne Feller, Paul Raymond, Eugene Jablonsky and James Schoepflin.

Pianists Aida Ribeiro and Linda Siverts will be highlighted along with “The Dueling Divas,” Melissa Percy Drumm and Susan Windham.

Several admission packages are available: A $60 admission fee includes a gourmet buffet with dessert and coffee at intermission, and a post-concert reception. General admission ($25) includes the concert and dessert and coffee at intermission. Students with identification may attend the concert and intermission dessert for $5.

GU’s fall concert

The Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra, directed by Kevin Hekmatpanah, will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at The Met. Performance tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for the GU community.

Easter eggs and DAR

Carol Gibb and her daughter, Donnell Gibb, will exhibit their collection of 100-plus Ukrainian-style Easter eggs at the Nov. 14 meeting of Spokane Garry Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, at Liberty Park United Methodist Church.

Jean McBurney will be given special recognition for her 50-year membership.

More DAR meetings

Marlene Holbrook, Washington State Society’s State Regent, DAR, will be guest of honor at the Jonas Babcock Chapter’s noon membership luncheon Saturday at Cavanaugh’s Fourth Avenue Inn.

DAR members and guests who are World War II veterans will be honored. The meeting is open to the public. Luncheon reservations, due by Tuesday, can be made by calling 926-4688.

The Esther Reed Chapter of DAR meets Wednesday for a no-host, 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Frontier West Restaurant, 2121 N. Division.

Don Ball, a local historian, will discuss “Memories of Yesterday.”
