Alcoa Invests In Computer Upgrades

Compiled From Wire Services

Aluminum Co. of America said Monday it plans to invest $150 million in an overhaul of its global computer network that will enable it to increase productivity.

The system, which will link the personal computers of 15,000 employees in 26 countries, will use technology and services from software giant Microsoft Corp. and computer hardware maker Hewlett-Packard Co.

The project should be completed by mid-1997.

Alcoa, the world’s largest aluminum maker, said the new network also will improve communications with customers and suppliers.

The new system will allow Alcoa employees in different time zones and countries to work together on problems, allowing the company to tap expertise regardless of location.
