Candidates Low In Name Familiarity

Compiled From Wire Services

It’s one year out from Election Day 1996 but the people running for president just don’t seem to be making much of an impression, according to a cable television poll Monday.

Almost three-quarters of Americans can’t name any two candidates running for president other than President Clinton, a poll for the cable TV channel “America’s Talking” revealed.

More than one-third couldn’t name one other candidate.

Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas was named most often, by 60 percent of poll respondents, trailed distantly by Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas, named by 20 percent.

Retired Gen. Colin Powell, who hasn’t decided whether to be a candidate, was named as a candidate by 25.6 percent.
