Cordova Edges Anderson For Rookie Of The Year Honors

Marty Cordova, the Minnesota Twins outfielder who had 24 homers and 84 RBIs, was voted the American League rookie of the year on Wednesday, topping California’s Garret Anderson in the closest race in 16 years.

Cordova and Anderson each received 13 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Cordova had 13 seconds and one third for 105 points, while Anderson had 10 seconds and four thirds for 99 points.

Astros owner Drayton McLane has informed baseball and local officials he may place the franchise in bankruptcy and sue Major League Baseball for damages because its officials are blocking a deal to sell the team to a group in Northern Virginia.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ board voted to end its 15-month search for a new owner by selling the team to Kevin McClatchy, but only after he raises some additional equity and formalizes a deal for a new stadium.

Kansas City Royals reliever Jeff Montgomery was among five players who filed for free agency, increasing the total to 129. Also filing were Seattle pitcher Lee Guetterman, Baltimore pitcher Mike Eichhorn, California pitcher Scott Sanderson and Chicago White Sox outfielder Lance Johnson.

In Pembroke Pines, Fla., Ozzie Canseco, the twin brother of Boston Red Sox outfielder Jose Canseco, was arrested for allegedly firing a gun at a delivery van and threatening the movers.
