Holy Names Faculty And Guests To Perform In Davenport Ballroom

The Holy Names Music Center will present some of its faculty and guest performers in a “Classical Concert in a Classical Setting” in the Davenport Hotel Isabella Ballroom Monday.

The concert of chamber music and arias by Schubert, Charpentier, Delibes and Stravinsky will serve as a fund-raiser for the Music Center’s Scholarship Fund.

The program features Sen. John Moyer as the narrator in Stravinsky’s “A Soldier ‘s Tale” along with an eight-piece chamber ensemble conducted by Robert Spittal.

Stravinsky, who had previously become famous as a composer of large-scale ballets, wrote the work in 1918 for an ensemble that could perform in even the smallest halls.

The piece is based on a Russian story of a soldier who makes an ill-fated deal with the devil.

Monday’s performance also includes pianists Linda Siverts and Aida Ribeiro playing Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor for Piano Duet, soprano Melissa Percy Drumm singing “Depuis le jour” from Charpentier’s opera “Louise” and soprano Susan Windham singing the Barcarolle from Delibes’ opera “Lakme.”

The Holy Names Music Center at Fort Wright has more than 360 students who take lessons with its 34-member faculty.

“We give about 60 scholarships each year to serious students who happen to have financial need,” says Judith Meyers, the center’s executive director.

“Last year our faculty institute talent grants were given to four students in recognition of their achievements in music. The event Monday will help fund both the scholarship and the talent grant programs.”
