Pac-10 Still Wary Of Alliance

Compiled From Wire Services

The idea of adding the Rose Bowl to the college football bowl alliance doesn’t appeal to Pacific-10 athletic directors, who worry about disrupting 90 years of tradition between the Pac-10 and Big Ten.

One option the athletic directors are considering is if the Big Ten or Pac-10 has the No. 1 team at the end of the season, and the alliance has the No. 2 team, they would meet in the Rose Bowl. If the positions are reversed, they would play in an alliance bowl.

“That’s as far as any of our people envision ever going, rather than putting the Rose Bowl formally into the alliance,” Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen said.

The reform-minded Knight Commission endorsed a proposed new governing structure for the NCAA that would give college presidents greater responsibility over athletic programs.

The plan will come to a vote at the NCAA’s annual convention in Dallas in early January.
